Yard Care in Phoenix and Glendale AZ

Does Your Ocotillo Look Dead?

Does your Ocotillo look dead? In this video there are two examples of newly planted Ocotillo Succulent plants that have been in the ground for just a few months. One looks green and lush but the other looks very dry and we hear that folks often think that they are dead when they look this way.

However, if you take a sharp knife to part of the trunk you can scrape away the top of the skin in order to see the green inside. This way you still know it is alive and will likely green up later. Many times these Ocotillos can go for months or even a year or two without greening up with leaves or blooming their orange blossom. I recommend checking the trunk for green or waiting until the entire shrub starts to crawl on top completely, like the shape of a “question mark”.
