Why Does My Winter Lawn Have Brown Spots?

Does your winter lawn already have dead or brown spots? It’s mid-February 2018 and we have been warming up quickly and are seeing dead patches show up more quickly in the full sun areas. This usually happens in March and April but the transition from the winter lawn to summer Bermuda will start to transition sooner due to the warmer daytime temperatures.

We usually recommend watering more heavily during this transition period but if you want to resolve these dead looking areas much sooner, we recommend thatching these areas to pull out the dead grass to make room for the Bermuda to start growing through more quickly. We try to seed bare areas during this time but because it is still cold at night we will have to wait until warmer night time temperatures. We can sod patch these areas but it would be better if we can allow the ground to transition naturally.
