Bougainvillea Bushes – Add Amazing Color to Your Landscape

Bougainvillea Bushes For Your Phoenix Lawn

One of the new must-have additions to the homes in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Phoenix is a Bougainvillea bush (Bougainvillea spectabilis).

This beautiful plant comes in different colors including purple, red, white, and pink. It can be used to enhance many types of landscaping and design schemes.

I’ve decided to create this blog to list some key facts about this type of plant and offer advice on whether it will work well with your lifestyle in the Arizona desert.

There are several varieties of bougainvillea plants including vines, groundcover, and bush form. These shrubs are fast-growing and need room to grow – at maturity, they can get 15 feet in height and as large as 20 feet in diameter.

Colorful Landscape Plant

When in full sun they bloom like crazy and can make a landscape look so colorful. The leaves are dense and evergreen with an oval-like shape, they have large thorns, and they do best in full sun.

Bougainvilleas are evergreen but will freeze below 28 degrees; you can cut them back severely and they will grow larger the next year. These shrubs are drought tolerant but plant care includes deeply watering 2-3 times a week in the summer. See our recommended watering schedule

Bougainvilleas are also non-allergenic and are susceptible to whiteflies. They have a fine root system that makes them difficult to transplant.
