When is the ideal time to plant a winter lawn?
In Phoenix, we start scalping and laying down seed on October 1st thru the 3rd week in October but it really depends on the weather and temperatures. Ideal temperatures are 80-90 degrees in the day and 60s at night. We find that if temperatures start to get lower than 55 degrees we notice it takes longer for the seed to germinate. We find that after Halloween (October 31st) we recommend mulch or soil topper to help the seed to stay moist and warm enough to germinate more quickly. If you scalp before October 1st, that is okay as long as you wait a little longer to lay down the seed. Planting the seed to early can sometimes run into the problem of having the bermuda grass grow and compete with the new rye grass. Keeping the bermuda dormant while it is short will help with the look of the winter lawn in December through the rest of the winter season.
