How Do Fertilizer Numbers Affect Your Lawn Care?

Fertilizer numbers?  What do they mean?  How do fertilizer numbers affect your lawn care?  Fertilizer companies are required to put three (3) numbers on every bag of fertilizer.  The numbers represent, in this order, the amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.

Nitrogen is the primary element that will make the plant, grass, or tree grow.  Nitrogen gives the ability for the plant to produce chlorophyll and is the only base fertilizer that will work when temperatures are below 60 degrees at night.

Phosphorus increases bloom or fruit yield and size. It also assists in root development and strengthens the stems of plant.  This is great for new plants when newly installed.

Potassium protects the plant from disease and assists through drought and cold weather.  Potassium also improves root growth.
