Filling Bare Areas Weeks After Overseeding in Phoenix
Have you planted/overseeded your lawn with winter rye seed this Fall to have a winter lawn here in Phoenix? If so you will likely have bare spots to fill in a few weeks after most of your yard comes up. We usually wait about 3-4 weeks after we first lay down seed to fill these areas in since some seed will germinate more quickly in some areas. This year (2020) has been exceptionally warm up to this point so the full sun areas may not pop (germinate) as quickly as the shaded areas. Then we got a quick drop on October 26th we had a quick drop in weather which put us at 50 degrees at night. Because the temperatures dropped so quickly the seed takes a little longer to germinate. To increase the speed during these cooler nights we actually recommend putting down a thin layer of soil topper to cover the seed to keep it warmer at night. Here is a link of what we recommend;
We make certain to put down seed in the bare areas and a really small layer of soil topper (too much soil topper will slow growth). This will help make the lawn look better and increase the speed of germination during the cooler nights. The watering should stay on 3-4 times per day for at least 1-2 more weeks after filling these bare areas in.
