Willow trees (botanical name is Acacia salicina) are a great desert tree for our Arizona desert climate if you want a large fast growing tree. These trees can grow up to be as tall as 50 feet in height and are airy looking (not very dense) which is good for monsoon season to allow wind to blow through them if they are pruned correctly.
These trees grow upright and are evergreen all year but do have some litter with both small seed pods and they have an awesome creme colored puffballs when in bloom. These trees do best in full sun and are thornless but their leaves are light green, long and slender.
They are native to Australia and are great for our desert climate because once established you can water them only once per month to keep them growing. They are hypoallergenic and there is a very similar variety of Acacia called the shoestring that grows very much to be the same size.
