Why Won’t My Sprinkler Valve Shut Off?
If your sprinkler system won’t stop running even when the timer is off, the issue is almost always the valve. In most cases, it comes down to one of two components: the diaphragm or the solenoid.
The Most Common Cause: A Bad Diaphragm
Inside every sprinkler valve is a rubber diaphragm that opens and closes to control water flow. Over time, debris can get lodged inside the valve or the diaphragm itself can tear or wear out. When this happens, the valve can no longer fully close—causing water to run nonstop. In our experience, this is the problem nine times out of ten.
The Other Possible Issue: A Faulty Solenoid
The solenoid is the electrical component that signals the valve to open and close. If your irrigation timer is completely off but one zone continues to run, a failed solenoid could be the cause. Solenoids are relatively inexpensive, typically costing between $10–$20, while an entire valve usually runs $20–$30.
Our Recommended Fix
At AMS Landscaping, we don’t guess which part failed—we replace the entire top portion of the valve. Instead of digging up and cutting out the whole valve, we:
- Purchase a matching valve
- Remove the top assembly (diaphragm, solenoid, and moving parts)
- Install that new top onto the existing valve housing
This gives you a brand-new working valve without unnecessary digging, saving time and labor.
How to Shut Off a Stuck Valve Temporarily
If a valve is stuck on:
You can shut off water to the entire irrigation system at the backflow.
Or, if your valve has a manual plunger, you can screw it down to close the diaphragm and stop water flow to that specific zone. This allows you to keep the rest of your yard running while you get the correct replacement valve.
Final Tip
Not all sprinkler valves are the same, so always buy the exact matching valve when replacing parts. Swapping the full top assembly ensures both the diaphragm and solenoid are new—eliminating guesswork and getting your system back up and running fast.
