Winter Watering Schedule For Phoenix
Winter Watering in Phoenix and the Desert Southwest requires much less watering once temperatures cool down in November. Here is the watering recommendations for your entire landscaping if you are in the Desert Southwest of Phoenix or Tucson:
If you have a winter lawn that is established you can now decrease the water to the turf areas. Here are my recommendations:
- 10 minute cycles 3 times per week in the morning with pop-up sprinklers
- 20 minute cycles 3 times per week in the morning with rotors (any type of moving sprinkler head)
These water times are based off of flat, full sun areas. If you have shade or hills, you will have to adjust accordingly. Hills require splitting the times up (3 run times at 3-4 minute cycles) or if you are in full shade, you will want to run less time than recommended here. If we have some warm up periods or if grass looks stressed, you may want to increase watering days but the yard will need time to dry between watering now that we are in the 40’s and 50’s at night. You don’t want to water too early to prevent frost if we get into the 30’s at night, so anytime after 7:00am is good.
If you don’t have a winter lawn, we recommend watering 1 day per week for about 10 minutes to keep the root growth going during the winter and fall months. As far as trees and plants, you can water those 1-2 hours once per week since there is not heavy growth during the cooler months of the year and remember that some plant material is deciduous and may lose all their leaves, but still may very well be alive.
